  • Le Quesnoy and the WW1 Western Front

    This tour is centred around commemorations at Le Quesnoy and the liberation of the town by New Zealand troops on 4th November 1918. Our tour group size is limited to between 7 to 14 persons. Accommodation is in local hotels or B&Bs (also known as gîtes in France). Our itinerary has an emphasis on paying our respects to the 12,500 New Zealander troops who lay buried in France and Belgium, and the relevant battlefields, memorials and gravesites on the Western Front. This tour allows the opportunity for like-minded people to visit the Western Front and follow in the footsteps of the NZ troops there in 1916 through to 1918.

    Tours commence from Brussels Monday 29 October 2018 and Monday 15 April 2019.

  • Le Quesnoy and the WW1 Western Front

    Day 1 Brussels
    Arrive Brussels and proceed to your hotel for check in and overnight. Afternoon free to explore Brussels. Welcome dinner (included) tonight. D

    Day 2 Brussels
    Depart Brussels for the Somme Battlefield. From Bapaume visit Warlencourt Cemetery see VC grave of Donald Brown, visit Pozieres and massive Lochnagar crater then on to Thiepval and the British Monument to the Missing. Continue to Somme Valley area our base for 3 nights (or similar). B

    Day 3 Somme Valley
    This morning we visit the New Zealand Memorial at Longueval and Caterpillar Valley Cemetery. Visit the Somme 1916 Museum in Albert with lunch (own arrangements) to follow, then to Amiens passing the site of operation Jericho in 1944, visit the Cathedral, return via Australian Memorial to the Missing at Villers. At Bretonneux, view the Red Barons last flight crash site beyond Corbie. B

    Day 4 The Somme, Wellington Quarry, Vimy Ridge
    Auchonvillers to then view the line where the New Zealanders plugged the Gap in 1918, see La Signy Farm, then h Arras and Notre Dame de Lorette and the new WWI Commemorative wall before returning to Arras via Vimy ridge. We visit the Wellington Quarry Museum which allows visitors to discover original sections of the large underground system of tunnels built by New Zealand Tunnellers in preparation for the Battle of Arras. To navigate their way, tunnellers named the various routes of the network after New Zealand cities. In memory of their heroic effort, the tunnels were later named Wellington Quarry and it is now open to the public. We then visit the Citadel where the Gestapo shot 216 French resistance fighters in WW2 and Faubourg d’Amiens Cemetery-RAF Monument to the Missing - Return to our accommodation via Doullens visiting the grave of Dick Travis at Couin. B

    Day 5 Canal du Nord, Grevillers, Caudry, Le Quesnoy
    Follow the New Zealanders March to Victory via Grevillers, Bapuame, the remains of the NZ Tunnellers military bridge over Canal du Nord at Havrincourt, Cambrai for lunch then to Caudry to visit the Lace Museum, Le Cateau and onto Le Quesnoy. Accommodation at Beaudignes area (or similar). Dinner included tonight. B,D

    Day 6 Le Quesnoy- Beaudignies
    See the route the New Zealanders took to Le Quesnoy. Our battlefield tour concludes at the Memorial in the Ramparts. Visit to Chateau Potelle. Dinner included tonight. B,D

    Day 7 Le Quesnoy, Ieper
    Visit Le Quesnoy Extension Cemetery, then visit Town Hall, hear ringing in Carillion in the Town Square. Our Commemoration Ceremony starts with wreath laying, march to the New Zealand Monument returning to the Town Hall. Subject to availability descend to the moat floor to view local Napoleonic re-enactment group. Dinner (or lunch) included in Le Quesnoy. Depart for Ieper and overnight. B,D

    Day 8 Ieper (Ypres)
    Start with Tyne Cot Cemetery and visit to New Zealand Battlefields at Gravenstafel, Passchendaele, Polygon Wood and Polderhoek Chateau continue to Passchendaele 1917 Museum for lunch break and free time to visit Flanders Field Museum. Optional attendance at 8pm for the ceremony at Menin Gate. Evening meal (own arrangements) in Grotemarkt square. B

    Day 9 Ieper (Ypres)
    We visit Buttes New British Cemetery, Polygon Wood via Zillebeke, then to Ieper and the Menin Gate. After a lunch break we depart for Messines (AKA Mesen) and the New Zealand Monument. - Afternoon visit to Poperinge, Talbot House and Nine Elms Cemetery to see Dave Gallaher’s grave. Return to Ieper. B

    Day 10 Messines
    We start with Ramparts Cemetery, visit New Zealand Messines Ridge Cemetery and the new Museum. We then continue to Cité Bon Jean Cemetery, Armentieres, onto Fromelle and Anthony Wildings grave before returning to Ieper. Visit Cloth Hall. Assemble for the Last Post Ceremony at 7.45 p.m. at the Menin Gate. Dinner included tonight. B,D

    Day 11 Waterloo
    Depart for Waterloo via Weregem to visit only American Cemetery in Flanders. - 11.00 am – Visit Wellington Museum in Waterloo, lunch break and then on to battlefield site at Mont St Jean to view the battlefield. Return to Auchonvillers area for overnight. This evening we have our farewell dinner together. Dependant on the itinerary, weather and timing we try to fit in a visit to the Forest of Compiègne where the Armistice was signed on 11/11/1918. B,D

    Day 12- Auchonvillers, Paris
    We view AW Museum thence via Meault, Marmetz, to Factory Corner, Ginchy ,Major Dickens Field grave, then Raymonde Asquiths grave at Guillemont thence German Cemetery at Rancourt enroute to Visit the French Great War Museum at Perrone - Continue to Charles De Gaulle Airport, (CDG) where the tour concludes this evening. B
