  • 6 DAY ITINERARY

    Commences Geneva Sunday 18 June 2017

    Day 1: Arrive Geneva.
    All aboard for our first rail journey of this tour to Wengen located at the foot of the magnificent Jungrau Mountain in the Bernese Oberland, at an elevation over 4,000 feet above sea level. For convenience and ease your luggage will be transported ahead to your hotel and will await you on arrival, along with a welcome drink! Wengen is a traffic free village, and will be your base for your five nights' stay at the 4* Hotel Sunstar - offering traditional accommodation with indoor pool and steam bath, breakfast and dinner are provided throughout your stay.

    DAY 2 - Explore the Jungfrau Region – Cable car and railway travel

    Your first day in the Alps will start with a cable car gondola transporting you from the valley to the summit of the Männlichen Mountain, famous for its views of the Lauterbrunnen Valley and Grindelwald. In the afternoon you will take the train to Kleine Scheidegg, the highest railway station in Europe and the starting point of the Jungfrau Railway which takes you to the ‘Top of Europe’. 

    DAY 3 - Lake Thun and Interlaken – Rail journey and river cruise

    The following day, after breakfast at your hotel you will enjoy a scenic train journey to Thun. This charming lake side city, with a picturesque castle that towers high above the late-medieval Old Town, offers a fascinating history to soak up that dates back to Neolithic times. You will have a guided tour of the city and castle and be able to relax in one of the many idyllic lake side cafés and restaurants for lunch. Following lunch, you will take a river boat cruise across Lake Thun to Interlaken for free time to shop and sightsee before travelling back by rail to Wengen. 

    DAY 4 - Schilthorn, Allmendhubel and Mürren – train travel and cable car

    Today, you travel by train to Stechelberg, a village surrounded by steep mountains, cliffs, waterfalls and traditional wooden alpine dwellings. Here you will take a cable car to Birg for a stop at the ‘Skyline Walk’ viewing platform; you can take the further cable car up to Schilthorne and have lunch in the famous revolving restaurant at the Piz Gloria. A cable car will return you down the mountain to the village of Mürren where you will take a short train ride to Allmendhubel for a guided walk. Allmendhubel offers the best view on the north faces of the Bernese Alps. There is a restaurant with a large sun terrace inviting you to bask in sunshine and linger with a cold beer; those with a botanic interest may enjoy a stroll to see beautiful Alpine Flora and rare botanics. Return to Wengen by rail for dinner at the hotel.

    DAY 5 - Schynige Platte and Interlakken – Alpine Gardens – luxury shopping and gastronomy

    The train journey from Wengen to Schynige Platte is known as the ‘Romantic Rail’ for its nostalgic cog railway and open carriages. This is an exhilarating journey that takes you along the edge of mountain ranges where stunning views and impressive wilderness opens up all around you. A visit to the Botanical Alpine Gardens awaits you at the top - you will be amazed at the summer display of over 650 plant species that are native to the Swiss Alps. Hunt to see the national flower, Edelweiss, with its fine woolly hairs that give these delicate flowers strong protection from UV light. From here you will have stunning views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Your afternoon will be spent at Interlaken, a magnificent city nestled between two lakes – it has long made visitors swoon for its picturesque beauty. With time to explore you can also do extensive shopping in Interlaken; there is something for everyone, from luxury retail to traditional craft, gastronomy and art. 

    DAY 6 - The Golden Pass Rail Journey to Geneva with Panoramic or Romantic rail journey    

    The last of your rail journeys from Wengen will leave you with a long lasting memory of Switzerland. Travelling on the famous Golden Pass trainline, you will either enjoy the modern streamline and comfort of the Panoramic line, surrounding you with the natural setting outside through panoramic windows, or the Golden Pass Classic line that lets you experience the glamour of the Belle Époque from classic carriages that offer a romantic setting of comfort and charm from a magical era of glamour and opulence in rail travel. Your train journey will take you to Geneva airport for your onward travel.
