Scotland Taster Tour- XTS
Number of Days: 7
Destination: Great Britain
Enjoy a week exploring the very best that Scotland has to offer, from the historic capital Edinburgh, to the majestic Highlands and beautiful Isle of Skye.
Starting in Edinburgh, we'll enjoy an included visit to the capital's imposing castle, before having a free afternoon to explore the city at your own pace. The next day we'll head to the Scottish Highlands, stopping off along the way at the historic university town St Andrews, and enjoying a whisky tasting at a distillery. Prepare yourself - and your camera! - for some fantastic scenery as we explore Loch Ness and the Isle of Skye. We'll also enjoy photo stops at the picture postcard Eileen Donan castle and Glenfinnan Viaduct - the latter was featured in the Harry Potter movies, with the Hogwart's Express calling at Glennfinnan!
Welcome to the start of your tour! Your tour leader will be waiting for you at our accommodation in Edinburgh during the afternoon. After everyone's checked in, we'll take a walking tour of the Scottish capital. Apart from Holyrood House, the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle, keep in mind that this is the city where JK Rowling famously penned the first Harry Potter novel. Fans might find the city strangely familiar! This evening we’ll enjoy a welcome dinner so you can get to know your tour leader and fellow travellers.
This morning we’ll enjoy a tour of the icon that dominates the skyline of Scotland’s capital, Edinburgh Castle! This imposing fortress on Castle Rock last saw military action in 1745, but claims to be the most besieged place in Great Britain due to its role as one of the most important strongholds in the Kingdom of Scotland. This afternoon you can choose to explore Edinburgh at your own pace, or join our fantastic optional excursions. This afternoon you can visit the Falkirk Wheel, Kelpies horse sculpture and 15th century Rosslyn Chapel. This evening there will be an optional Spirit of Scotland dinner and pipe band show.
Our first destination this morning as we head towards the Scottish Highlands is the city of St Andrews. The University of St Andrews is the third oldest place of higher learning in the English-speaking world, and the town is known worldwide as the “home of golf”. We’ll then drive to Pitlochry, where you’ll have some free time to have lunch and see the Dam and its famous salmon ladder. This afternoon we’ll enjoy a tasting of Scotland’s most famous export at a whisky distillery, before stopping off at the Queen’s View, a vantage point that looks out over the stunning scenery of Loch Tummel in the Scottish Highlands. To round off a busy day of sightseeing we’ll arrive at our accommodation in the Highlands this evening and enjoy an included dinner.
This morning we’ll enjoy a beautiful scenic drive through the stunning Scottish Highlands on our way to Loch Ness. You can enjoy an optional cruise of the loch - see if you can spot ‘Nessie’ the Loch Ness Monster and take in the impressive ruins of Urquhart Castle as you drift past on your boat ride! This afternoon you’ll have the option to visit Dunrobin castle, the most northerly of Scotland’s great houses and one of the grandest - resembling a French chateau, it boasts 189 rooms and magnificent castle gardens.
The highlight of today is your visit to Skye, an island in the Inner Hebrides on the west coast of Scotland. Along the way we’ll take a photo stop at Eileen Donan, a small island with a picturesque castle that frequently appears on postcards, film and television. Arriving on Skye, we’ll visit Kilt Rock, an imposing sea cliff offering incredible views of the coastline. We’ll visit Skye’s largest town for a lunch stop, before enjoying another photo stop at the Old man of Storr, a large pinnacle of rock that can be seen for miles around. On our way to our accommodation in Ben Nevis region we’ll stop at Glenfinnan Viaduct, the famous railway bridge that features in the movies Harry Potter and the Chambers of Secrets and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
This morning we’ll enjoy a scenic drive past Ben Nevis - the highest mountain in the British Isles, and then stop off at Glen Coe, considered one of the most spectacular and beautiful places in Scotland. Our next stop is to see the Wallace Monument, built to commemorate William Wallace’s most famous victories at The Bridge of Stirling. This afternoon we’ll arrive in Glasgow, and after checking into our hotel you can join your tour leader for a walking tour of Scotland’s second city.
After breakfast, we say goodbye to our travel companions. You have the option to finish the tour in Glasgow or return to Edinburgh this morning with the coach. We hope you have enjoyed your 7 day tour of Scotland!
