  • Join us on our fabulous Rhododendron garden tour. This 5 day tour commences in Auckland.

    This is a small group tour and the actual numbers of participants are limited. Part of the fun of touring is meeting new people and our small groups offer a great opportunity for you to enjoy this advantage. If you are keen to join then we recommend you should register as soon as possible.

  • NZ Rhododendron festival gardens tour

    Commences Auckland Friday

    Day 1: Auckland - New Plymouth

    We depart Auckland and travel south through the Waikato, to Te Kuiti and through the limestone country of the Awakino Gorge to the Tasman coast. On the way into New Plymouth we visit Abbie and Mark Jurys garden at Tikorangi - developed by the family over the generations. Nearby, Ann Walker and Vince Naus' riverside garden features traditional, formal and modern plantings around their 100-year-old villa. Our hotel is near Len Lye’s Wind Wand kinetic sculpture and the waterfront boardwalk. Enjoy a Welcome Dinner (included) at a local restaurant.

    Day 2: Taranaki gardens

    We visit Judi Gopperth’s Hirst Cottage, built in 1862, where the garden features a green and white theme and then Valda Poletti at renowned Te Kainga Marire, a native garden of Global Significance, then to Tupare Garden. At Pukeiti wander amongst one of the world’s greatest collections of rhododendrons - on the lower slopes of Mt Taranaki. N.B: Buggy transport may be available if required. This afternoon visit Pukekura Park in the city before returning to our hotel.

    Day 3: Taranaki gardens

    We explore and lunch at unique Tawhiti museum in Hawera. We drive to Stratford and Merleswood Garden to meet Erica Jago and stroll in her 1.5 acres of rhododendron gardens, a Garden of Regional Significance. We continue to Hawera to visit Jenny and John Pease's Gravetye Garden, a formal garden with sweeping lawns, hedges and topiary. We explore Nigel Ogle's unique creation Tawhiti Museum and visit Jennifer and Ken Horner's large country garden, Puketarata set high on a hill with magnificent views before driving to Whanganui. We tour the city landmarks and heritage buildings before checking into our hotel.

    Day 4: Whanganui - Ruapehu

     

    We drive over to Kimbolton in the Manawatu region to the Wilson family's Cross Hills garden, 7 hectares of park like grounds with a renowned collection of over 2000 rhododendrons and azaleas in bloom along with tree paeonies, candelabra primulas and perennials. Continuing north, we stop for lunch at Taihape then head into the dramatic landscape of the Central Plateau and around the slopes of Mount Ruapehu to Ohakune and on to Whakapapa village and The Chateau Tongariro Hotel in Tongariro National Park. Farewell dinner (included) tonight.

    Day 5: Chateau and gardens

    In Kio Kio we lunch with Debbie Robertson at her Crosshills garden. After a leisurely breakfast at The Chateau if the weather is kind we drive up the mountain road to the Top of the Bruce, the starting point for skiers, for a close up view of Mt Ruapehu and panoramic views of the region. Then we’re bound for Taumarunui and on to Kio Kio in the King Country to visit Crosshills, a lovely garden just north of Otorohanga, where our private lunch is hosted by Debbie Robertson. This notable springtime garden was designed by Debbie's mother-in-law Elizabeth Robertson. After lunch we drive back north through the Waikato farmlands and reach Auckland in the late afternoon.
