  • Our tour visits picturesque Tuscany, exquisite villas and gardens throughout northern Italy, “the Eternal City” Rome, Pisa, Florence, Lucca, Tuscany, Venice, the beautiful Italian Lakes, walk the famous Cinque Terre and enjoyed some of the best scenery in Europe. 

    This is definitely not just a garden tour as you visit many of those special places you have read about over the years. 50% of the worlds art is in Italy - combine this with the history, scenery and culture and you see why it’s a favourite destination for so many.

    This tour provides a relaxing, yet stimulating and informative holiday experience and the programme designed to eliminate many of the more tiring aspects of travel. We understand the hassle of moving each morning to a new hotel, so wherever possible we have a number of nights in the same location and have tried minimise long coach travel. Our accommodation is generally in boutique 3 to 4 star centrally located hotels.

  • Day 1 – Friday: Rome

    Upon arrival Rome you will be met at the airport by your tour escort. After transferring to drop of luggage at the hotel we have a city sights tour. See the relics of this once world power and the beautiful structures that still remain. Settled by the Etruscans and from the 509 century BC by the Romans, the city later became the world centre for Christianity.

    The remainder of the afternoon is free until you meet up with your groupagain this evening for our Welcome Dinner.

    Day 2 – Saturday: Rome 

    Morning walking tour to include Circus Maximus, the Colosseum and walk through the ruins of the Roman Forum. Commences 9.50am at Pizza Navonna.

    This afternoon we visit Villa d'Este at Tivoli, renowned for its spectacular use of water. See the organ fountain “Walk of the Hundred Fountains”.

    Day 3 – Sunday: Rome

    Morning visit to the Vatican Museums, a series of interconnecting palaces and galleries that display the treasures of the Vatican. See works by Giotto, Fra Angelico, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Bellini, Titian and Caravaggio and Michelangelo's masterpiece, the Sistine Chapel. St Peter's Basilica, built over the tomb of the crucified saint, contains a magnificent display of art including Michangelo's Pieta.

    Optional stroll to the Trevi Fountain after dinner.

    Day 4 – Monday: Rome

    A free day to explore Rome at leisure, shop or relax.

    Day 5 – Tuesday: Viterbo, Sacro Bosco, Siena

    Leave Rome this morning for Viterbo and Bomarzo's Sacro Bosco, a unique collection of mythical, literary and heraldic figures in Vicino Orsini's 16thC park. Visit Villa Lante at Bagnaio, near Viterbo. A magnificent Renaissance style garden dating back to the 1560's it remains a landmark in Italian gardens, arranged on four levels along a main axis, emphasised by fountains. Experience Tuscany this afternoon, little changed since the days of old, with cypress trees, picturesque villas, cultivated crops, wildflowers, olive groves and vineyards. See why painters favoured the area for it’s unique colours and contrasts.

    Continue on to Siena. On arrival we have a walking tour of the walled medieval city of Siena. The quaint stores, mansions, narrow streets, beautiful buildings, medieval gates, walls and towers, along with its amazing history make Siena one of the most special places in Italy.

    Day 6 – Wednesday: Siena

    Travel from Siena this morning to Villa Chigi Cetinale with its gardens designed by Carlo Fontana, now restored. This renaissance garden, built for Cardinal Flavio Chigi, is Fontana's masterpiece.

    Day 7 – Thursday: Tuscany

    Depart for picturesque Monte Olivato, the home of the White Benedictine monks. Stroll down Cypress Avenue to the beautiful church. Time for a coffee at ther ancient gate house then we continue on to Florence – a medieval Medici city and world classical arts capital. Our hotel is in the historical centre of the city, a short stroll from monuments of the historical era.

    Day 8 – Friday: Florence

    This morning we have a walking tour through old Florence to see the famous Gates of Paradise (the north and east Baptistry doors were commissioned from 1401 and not completed by artist craftman Lorenzo Ghiberti until 1452), the Duomo and Campanile Tower (designed by Brunelleschi and completed in 1359), Ponte Vecchio and Santa Croce.

    Enroute see the marvellous array of leather goods and exquisite jewellery and the statue of David (by Michelangelo).

    Florence led the artistic and cultural renaissance of the 15th century, with painters such as Dante, Petrarch and Machiavelli and artists such as Michelangelo, Botticelli and Donatello – turning the city into one of the world’s great artistic capitals.

    This afternoon at our Italian cooking demonstration our chef takes us through the preparation, with hints on how to make our own “taste of Italia” meal. We then join in the relaxed lunch and this afternoon explore old Florence at leisure.

    Day 9 – Sunday: Florence / Pisa

    Depart Florence this morning for Pisa to view the Leaning Tower, Baptistry and Duomo. Ask about the fascinating crusader graffiti. Please note that entrance to the monument buildings is optional and extra.

    In the Middle Ages Pisa was the dominant naval power of the western Mediterranean and that combined with trade links with Spain and Africa brought substantial wealth and power and formed the basis of a scientific and cultural revolution reflected still by Pisas amazing buildings in the Campo dei Micacoli (Field of Miracles). Pisa’s decline, following defeat by Genoa in 1284 was hastened by the silting up of the River Arno and harbour.

    Day 10 – Monday: Pisa / Lucca / La Spezia

    On to Lucca - famous as a fortified city and also for its gardens. We visit an inner city garden this morning followed by a short tour of the city walls.

    This afternoon visit Collodi, located in the Tuscany region of Italy, is about midway between Montecatini Terme Spa and Lucca – the traditional home of Pinocchio and Geppetto. The story is one of the worlds most famous children’s tales, written by Carlo Collodi. In the story Pinocchio was carved from a piece of pine by a small village woodcarver (Geppetto). He was created as a childs wooden puppet, but dreamt of becoming a real boy. The name Pinocchio is a local Tuscan word for pine nut.

    We then visit Villa Garzoni on the hill overlooking Collodi - here the land leading up to the Villa is sculptured as a cascading garden merging the geometric symmetry of Renaissance with the spectacular effects of Baroque styles. The garden contains the last remaining labyrinth among the Lucca villas. Time for a coffee before we continue our journey into the Italian Riviera.

    Day 11 – Tuesday: Cinque Terre

    We are each equipped with an All day Heritage Walking Pass, trail information and a Cinque Terra Rail Pass before we head off today to explore the beautiful coastal villages and walkways. Walk as much, or as little as you like. This is always one of the highlights of our Italy tours.

    Day 12 – Wednesday: Portovenere and Portofino

    We have an excursion to visit the picturesque fishing villages – now millionaire’s playgrounds of Portofino and Portovenere.

    Day 13 – Wednesday: Venice

    Early morning departure for Venice. Our hotel is located in a convenient position, just meters far from Santa Lucia Ferro Via station and Piazzale Roma, the main vehicular access point to the city.

    The afternoon is spent exploring the small lanes and canals of this beautiful island city. Visit to St Marks Duomo and square and the Rialto Bridge. Optional cruise of the canals tonight to see Venice by night.

    Day 14 – Saturday: Italian Lakes

    Travel from Venice to the Italian Lakes of Lago Como and Lago Maggiorre.

    Continue to Stresa on the western shore of Lake Maggiorre, with its picturesque mellow lakeside villas, gardens, sparkling waters and panoramic views to the mountains. Our hotel is situated in central Stresa, overlooking the lake.

    Day 15 – Thursday: Lago Como

    Subject to being open - we drive to Lake Como this morning to visit Villa Cicogna, which features frescos, renaissance furniture and ornamentations. As well as gardens on three levels, an arcaded courtyard and a spectacular water staircase in the garden. Return to Lake Maggiorre to explore and time for a little shopping.

    Day 16 – Friday: Stresa / Lago Maggiorre

    This morning, we visit Isola Bella, the most famous of the three islands on Lago Maggiorre. The palace and gardens dominate the small island and it appears to float on the surface of the lake. The terraces are ornamented with statues and marble balustrades and a profusion of hanging gardens. Built in the 17th century, Isola Bella is one of the most significant Baroque gardens of Europe. We visit another villa this afternoon - a classic example featuring the dramatic use of the natural topography to create architectural effect. Farewell dinner (included) tonight.

    Day 17 – Saturday: Stresa / Milan Malpensa

    The tour ends this morning - transfer to the Milan International Airport for onward travel.
